Concepts and Goals
As a choreographer, dancer and educator, Michiyo Sato is active both in Japan and overseas. Often taking inspiration from mythology and folk tales, and being interested especially in traditional Japanese and ancient Greek performing arts in which dance, drama and music are integrated as one form, she blends elements of different cultures in her unique theater dance pieces. Her choreography has been described in The New York Times as “sophisticated in style and content.” Michiyo Sato studied the dance of Isadora Duncan and not only performs from the Duncan repertoire but also utilizes its methods to explore her own archetypal movement vocabulary. As an instructor of Ideokinesis, Sato explores body awareness through anatomy and image work.
Future Plans

  • To make pieces based on local myths, restoring them to their origins through workshops and performances.
  • To give lectures in corporate settings regarding posture and movement, and to teach ways to nurture physical comfort and health in the workplace.
  • To present children's classes that encourage physical, psychological and imaginative development, while always valuing each child's innate expressive qualities.
  • To make performance pieces that are empowering to women.
